Louisiana Cotton

Before my Daddy went in the US Army in 1943 he and his 11 siblings worked on the Farm to bring in the cotton crop. That was their cash crop and source of income for whole year.

I remember him telling me how they worked so hard to bring in the cotton that last year before he left for the Army. He said they were paid $900.00 and Blue John Milk for the cotton crop that year which was a lot money back then, more than enough for the family to live well for the rest of the year in the Louisiana swamp.

Well, his father who loved to gamble and drink took that $900.00 and lost it on some bad poker hands in one month.

I remember my grandfather still loved to drink and gamble when I heard the Ole’ stories from his youngest kids..

My Daddy never really forgave his father for that nor for the abuse to his mother. Even many years later when he spoke about his father it was with bitterness. I think that is why he joined the Army against father’s wishes. He just had to get away from that place where Cotton Was King.
