Abstract: Eulalie Simon and her husband, Michel Papillon, free people of
color, petition to recover a debt from Charles Simon, also a free person of
color. Charles borrowed $716.14 from Eulalie on 22 November 1822,
providing a mortgage on a tract of land in the "Grand Prairie of Opelousas"
as security. While Charles has paid one installment of the debt, he has
"wholly refused to pay" the remaining $616.14. Therefore, Eulalie asks that
Charles be condemned to repay the debt and that the mortgaged land be
seized and sold to satisfy the debt.
