I have thoroughly studied the Union Parish censuses between 1840 and 1900 over the past 20 years. The 1860 census is fairly complete, at least compared to the 1870 and 1850 censuses. The 1870 census missed numerous white families that I am certain were living in Union Parish in 1870 (based upon deeds, tax lists); I think at least several hundred families were missed in 1870. 1850 also missed many families, but less than the 1870 did. However, while the 1860 census missed some families whom I know were living in Union Parish in 1860, there are no large gaps or anything of that nature.

In what portion of Union Parish did the Coles live? Was there any chance they lived across the state line in southern Union Co AR? Many, many families were missed on the 1860 and 1850 Union Co AR censuses, especially the area around Hillsboro, Caledonia, Pigeon Hill.
