I don't live in Louisiana. Yes the Lowery's can be elusive. Part of the problem is that many of the older generations married multiple times and had several children by each marriage. There is also a lot of similarity in the names. Also, there are a few cases of half siblings marrying into the same family, which only adds to figuring out who belongs to who. If your James Abraham Lowery is the one married to Nancy Cook, then part of my Lowery branch is step siblings to your family by James' marriage to Cresius Richardson. I also belong to another Lowery branch as my both my maternal grandprents were Lowery descendents. I'd be more than happy to help you as I can.
