Laurette,
I'll apologize in advance for not knowing a whole lot to help you help me, but am interested in knowing more about the Labrie's that were in New York about 1880-1890.You seem to know alot about LaBrie history, so thought you'd be a good one to ask.
My great great grandfather was a LaBrie (first name and wife unknown at this point) who married a woman with maiden name ofChapman. They had at least one son named William John.
The story is that Wm's father was a real creep and deserted the family when he was young, so as soon as got old enough, he changed his surname (legally??) from LaBrie to Chapman, to spite his father.
William was born in New York abt. 1890, but I don't have any more info than this right now. (Can't seem to connect yet with Chapman folks who can tell me more.)
So, my questions for you are:
Were there a lot of LaBrie's in New York back then?
Do you know the general history of the LaBrie's in the US?Had they been in the US for a long time already, or were the first US LaBrie's pretty recent?
Where and when did they first appear?
Hope you can help, or direct me to someone who might.
Thanks!
Brenda Hawkins
