Your suggestion would make it easier for those of us trying to connect the dots - and the first change was to similar sounding LaFave.But since this was done in English speaking areas, I think the goal was to go one step further and lose the overtly French Canadian surname, keep the meaning (which they mistakenly thought was "Bean")in order to blend in with the English speakers.
It would have turned out differently if the correct base word ("fevbre") had been used.But imagine even more "Smiths" to untangle!!
