i recieved this email from R10jcc1@wpo.cso.niu.edu ; i believe from the French American genealogy society concerning the marriage of Joseph laferriere to Ovida Tessier It certainly looks like we are in the same Tessier family, but we are only collateral cousins, not lineal cousins. If I knew more about your line, I could figure out the exact degree of cousinhood we share. Meanwhile, here is what I found about your ancestors, so far. Joseph Laferriere married Ovida Tessier from Ste Elisabeth's. Joseph L. died on June 2, 1950 at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 17 days. He was buried on June 5, 1950, at St. Felix. Witnesses to his burial were: Arthur St Georges, Narcisse Laferriere and Raoul Laforest. His wife,Ovida Tessier, had died 11 years earlier. Ovida Tessier died on September 8, 1939, at the age of 62 years, 11 months and 23 days. She was buried at St. Felix on September 11. The only witness recorded for her burial is her husband, Joseph. Ovida was originally from Ste Elisabeth's. She was born to Severin Tessier, a farmer, and Azilda (Exilda) Caisse on May 22, 1875. Ovida's godparents were Hyacinthe Mousseau and his wife, Felecite Joly (of Berthier). (I am related to Severin, also to Felecite Joly, if I recall correctly). No other children were found at Ste Elisabeth for Severin and Azilda, and no burials either. Severin and Azilda moved to St. Felix and Severin became a mailman over there. They had the following children at St Felix. They are Ovida's sisters and brothers: J. Albert, born and baptized January 26, 1884. Godparents were Alexis Joly and his wife, Octavie Tessier ( I am connected to them too. My grandfather Tessier's mother was a Joly). This baby died on March 9 and was buried March 10. Witnesses were Joe Caron and Baptiste Lachappelle. J. Albert Jules Armand, born on February 25, 1885. Godparents were Albert Olivier and Angelina Caisse. M. Antoinette, born and baptized February 18, 1886. Her godparents were Nelson-Horace Poitras (a manufacturer) and his wife, Elie Caisse. M. Blanche Juliette, born May 1, baptized May 2, 1888. Her godparents were Arthur Caisse Marchand (of Berthier) and his wife, Elisabeth Bayeur. M. Louise Emerentienne, born March 31 and baptized April 1, 1893. Godparents were: Aristide Ferland, a medical student, and his mother, Louise Caisse. Aristide was the son of Louis Ferland and M. Louise Caisse of Ste. Elisabeth. This baby girl died on September 24 and was buried September 26, 1894. She was 1-1/2 years old. That funeral was witnessed by her father and Pierre Coutu. An unnamed baby boy was born and buried on March 2, 1883. Witnesses were Baptiste Lachappelle and Onesime Robillard. I am very interested in ARISTIDE FERLAND. My grandmother's sister, Alma Genereux, married him. I have photos of him and some of his descendants. I've been to Auntie Alma's home in Montreal and vacationed with her and her descendents at the beach. She visited us in RI as well. I never met her husband, Aristide, he died before my time. I knew his daughter Yvonne Emerencienne. I was very small, but I remember these people. Lately, I've been trying to find out more about his medical practice. He moved his family to Montreal to work there, but I cannot find what hospital he was associated with or anything about his medical career. Aristide's parents were highly respected people in Ste Elisabeth's. I'm trying to find out why....DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ARISTIDE FERLAND AND HIS PARENTS AND BROTHERS? His grandchildren would be my age now, but I haven't found them yet. I want to write to them. I think Severin and Azilda had more kids than that. There are gaps in the record. People were having a new baby every year or two in those days. They didn't usually go 5 years before the next child. My guess is that after leaving Ste Elisabeth, they lived somewhere else, before moving to St Felix. I think a few kids were born somewhere else. Maybe not, but that sometimes happened. By the way, when you search for your relatives, don't forget to check ALL the possible spellings and dit names. Hervieux also appears as Arvieux, and Harvieux. And Laferriere is often written as Aure-Laferriere or Aurez-Laferriere or just plain Aure or Aurez. This makes our job very tough. If we don't check them all out, we miss some people that we need.
