I can just about hear your granfather saying 'Temp-pi' and probably with a head movement to re-enforce it. The expression is a cross between 'tough luck' and/or 'so what' It could be said with the' I told you so' intonation, too but usually by our granmothers!
Another comes to mind 'crai-dur' which would be 'really, you don't say'which in reality translated to 'I truly believe' or 'I saying the absolute truth' pending who was the speaker. The old storytellers of the Berthier to Joliette region where famous for the intonations they could place on such expressions. They could scare you out of your shoes around holloween.
I glad to hear you enjoyed your stay in this lovely region when you came to Quebec and yes, the people are wonderful.
