Father John Lahey

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Father John Lahey, 84, died Nov. 3, 2008, at Mount St. Francis Nursing Center in Colorado Springs. He was born Prosper John Lahey Jr. on Jan. 18, 1924, on a farm south of Solomon, KS, to Prosper John Sr. and Nell (Ryan) Lahey. He grew up in the Solomon community, graduating from a country school in Saline County in 1937 and from Solomon High School in 1941. He attended a business school and worked for a certified public accounting firm in Abilene. He began a 20-year civil service career with the Air Force. In 1962, he was accepted as a candidate for the priesthood in the Diocese of Salina and completed seminary at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Conception, MO. Father Lahey was ordained on May 27, 1967. His initial assignments included St. Joseph's Parish in Damar, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Concordia, St. John the Baptist Parish in Beloit and St. Mary, Queen of the Universe Parish in Salina. Beginning in 1974, he served as chaplain at St. John's Hospital in Salina and was pastor at St. Patrick's Parish in Gypsum. From 1982 to 1987, he was pastor at St. Aloysius Gonzaga Parish in Osborne and then at the Concordia parish from 1987 to 1994. In 1994, he moved to Solomon, where he served as pastor at Immaculate Conception Parish and also St. Patrick's Parish in Gypsum. He retired in 1999.

He moved to Colorado Springs in the fall of 2004.

Father Lahey was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1086 in Solomon.

A parish vigil will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at Immaculate Conception Church in Solomon. The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Immaculate Conception Church. Bishop Paul Coakley will be the celebrant, with priests of the Salina Diocese concelebrating. Bishop Emeritus George Fitzsimons will deliver the homily. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Solomon with military honors.

Survivors include a sister, Donna Lahey Sexton and husband Marvin, and a brother, Jim Lahey and wife Catherine, all of Colorado Springs: a sister-in-law, Shirley Lahey of Sparks, NV; and 17 nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary and Helen; a brother, Donald; and a nephew, Tom Lahey.

Memorials to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Mount Calvary Cemetery or the donor's choice.
