spelling: Leahey vs. Leahy

Does anyone know anything about the distinction between the spellings of Leahey and Leahy? In my research, my family's spelling changed from Leahy to Leahey inexplicably about a hundred years ago, and apparently was changed by educated people. Is this at all significant?
