Dear Dale, Your followup intrigued me because my maiden name, Laughy, is apparently a variant spelling of Lahey. My ancestor, John Laughy, immigrated to New Brunswick, Canada in 1831. The spelling was also recorded as Lacky or Lackey. His Canadian descendents pronounce the "gh" as "h", where the New England branch pronounces it "f". It is hard to know how far afield to go with variant spellings when researching this surname.
