Holy Crap! I was not expecting this even though I had hopes
that someone in your line knew more about it.
To be brief; yes. I have been trying to tie this down for
30 years and this is pretty much the final piece I needed.
Most KY branch Lail's were slave owners. This includes your
ggg g-f Charles Lail, (1807-61) so his son Charles Jr.,
(1846-1911) grew up in that sort of world.
That brings us to the first Lail of color, George W Lail
(1867-1954). As you can see he was born after the Civil
War. This was 3 years before the marriage to your gg g-m
Anna Clifford. GW's death certificate lists his father as
Charlie Lail and mother as Mollie Thomas.
There only were 2 Charlie Lail's around in 1867. Your guy
and a 1st cousin who lived in Gallatin Co., KY which is 2
counties away from Harrison. The family of this cousin did
not have slaves in 1860 (they did in 1850). So the odds
always favored your gg g-f as the Charlie in question.
From what I gather here your gg-f Frank Clifford Lail
acknowledged the relationship. Thank you and your Aunt so
much!
