I "think" I can help but this is a huge messy
problem area for us.
There was only one Lail family in the area of
Transylvania Co. at the time period you are
interested in; Isham (Isom) Lail b. ca. 1812
and 2 sets of his grandchildren.
The problem with Isham and his family is that
he keeps moving around. Before 1850 he's in
the Burke/Catawba area. For at least 1850-60
he is living in Rabun Co. GA. In 1870 he is
inCherokee Co. NC and in 1880 he's in
Transylvania Co.,NC. Records on him and his
are very well scattered. :(
Isham had 4 sons;
1) The eldest died in the Civil War. He did
leave a son but he wasn't old enough to be
having children in 1874. (b. 1859)
This son; Samuel Lail is the progenitor
of a good sized family based in Graham
Co.,NC
2) The youngest died in 1872.
3) # 3 moved to Tennesse (Grainger Co.) and
had children there before and after 1874.
4) That leaves #2 son William Cooke Lail.
He was born ca. 1835 (census dating) and
was married at least twice. The 2nd
marriage took place in 1876 in Clay Co.,
NC. He has to be the one unless it's an
out-of-wedlock situation. To the best of
my knowledge William evaded both the 1870
& 1880 censuses so proof is definitely
lacking.
I hope this has been of assistance. I look
forward to your reply.
