I don't see any Joseph that would match your ancestor.

These are the Josephs listed on my newspaper:

Joseph, son of David Laing (of John Laing and Elizabeth Shotwell, of John Laing of Scotland) and Mary Thorne.
David's son, Jacob, is my ancestor and was born 1747.

Joseph born 1762, of Abram, (of David Laing and Mary Thorn) and married Sarah Marsh. They had Mary who married Isaac Laing.

Joseph, born 1773, married 1798 Anne Webster, of John Laing and Susannah Webster, of David Laing and Mary Thorne. They had Susannah, John, Rebecca, Nathan.

Joseph, who died in the army, of Elizabeth Webster and James Laing. No years here, but Elizabeth was dau of Mary Laing, born 1768, and married Isaac Webster 1787. Mary was dau of John Laing and Susannah Webster. John Laing was son of David Laing and Mary Thorn.

Joseph, died young, of Jacob Laing and Rachel Shotwell. Jocob's son Abraham is my line.

Joseph Laings from another source-these look like marriages:

Joseph Laing, of Piscataway, and Anna Webster, Essex Co, 1795 in Plainfield.

Joseph Laing, Middlesex,Co, and Sarah Marsh, Essex Co 1784 at Rahway. Son of David Laing and Mary Thorn.

I am printing out your email so that if I ever come across this info I will be sure to send it to you.

Surnames were commonly used as first names by these Quakers, as you may have noticed.

Do you know where these Laings lived in New Jersey?

hoping the best on your research,
