LAING, Major of Burnside, Tasmania c. early 1800's

Does anyone know who this chap is? Burnside is/was a house or property' in Tasmania. If I had to guess his regiment I'd say he was a Scottish Highlander, but can't be sure.

I don't suppose any of his correspondence/letters/papers have survived? ( Letters home to Scotland?)I'd like to know of his kin, and where he was around 1820-1840. It seems he spent time in Tasmania c.1815-1820, but may have been serving with a regiment in Scotland (Edinburgh) before this, also in Ireland. Does anyone know his movements or background or anything...?

Thanks
Rosie
