I am descended from Abigail Ambrose. I had put her in my data base erroneously as Abigail Cheney, per "Middletown Upper Houses". However, in looking at "Families of New Haven" I found that Abigail was daughter of Samuel and Hope Lamberton Ambrose. In "Records of the Court of Assistants of the Colony of the Massachusetts Bay" p127 it is stated that in 1678, Hope was granted divorce on the grounds that Samuel had deserted her over fours before and the statements of witnesses that he was living with other women in Jamaica.
Hope married William Cheney in 1698, and Abigail's son, Cheney Clark, was born in 1698, perhaps the name was to honor her mother's marriage. Since there were 20 years between Ambrose and Cheney, this may have been the time Hope was married to "Herbert".
