Hello Gary, i come from Quebec and maybe i have informations on this topic for you. I work on the tree, the old roots of the family in France but i have few links.
First of all, the name in France was De Lamothe. Near Saint-Sever-sur-L'Adour there is a village named Lamothe.
It is possible that village was the birth place of the family name. And, in the old times there was some De Lamothe in these places. Like : Gaillard De Lamothe lord of Lamothe and working for the king of England Edward 2...
