Hi, Cary:

The information comes from Howland Fay Atwood, author/compiler of a genealogy collection concerning Hartland, Vermont maintained by the Vermont Historical Society in Montpelier, Vermont:

I corresponded in writing with Mr. Atwood in 2001 on the matter and he provided the information, which appeared to come from a Lamphear family bible inscribed:

"Holy Book, Presented to Amelia P. Lamphear by a friend."
"Reuben and Amelia P. Lamphear Book," "This book was given to me by Reuben Lamphear May 18, 1871" -- (Signed) Eliza J. Shattuck.

I have no idea what happened to the bible, although I know it is not in the Atwood collection as I have seen it.
