My grandfather was actually born a Goldstein and my great-grandfather changed it in 1917 during WWI because Goldstein sounded too German, and anything German sounding during that time was looked down upon.

My great uncle has speculated that it was of English Origin. However, usually any name ending in "kin" is of Jewish extraction.

Don't know if this is any help, but I thought I would pass it along!
