Here is the 1st time I have found Landau. Back in those times you were named for the place you lived. I believe this line was the Gruningen family and moved to Landau. His parents most likely were Gruningen and he was one of the first Landau's. That would explain the hypheneated name. Throughout all of my research I have found no Landau or variation before this man.
Following is his line I have many more lines from this family, but am not sure how they connect to him.

Following is the country time line of the Landau name:

1200's Germany (Landau, Plafz, Bayern, Germany)
1300's Germany
1400's Switzerland
1500's Spain, Czech, England, France
1600's US, Preussen, Canada, Norway
1700's Poland, Scottland, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands
1800's Ireland, USSR, Ukraine

The original spelling as far back as I can tell is Landau. (Known variations: Land, Lands, Landa, Lande, Landeau, Landis, Lando,
Landoe, DeLanda)

Please let me know if you have additional information or would like to share info.
