I have just returned from a genealogy trip to Petersburg, Menard County, Illinois seeking information about Frederick Landau (my great-great-grandfather) and his family. I found quite a bit of material that I am still in the process of logging to my database. He is not related to August (as far as I know at this point). He was born in Goddelsheim in Waldeck, Germany. His wife Doretta was born in Hanover. They came to Brooklyn, NY in the 1840's and then moved to Illinois in 1858, dying there in 1895. They had 9 or maybe 10 children, 8 of whom survived to adulthood. He was a cabinet maker.
