William Lansing 6/16/02
Your information on the Lansing family may be of interest to me, because I am researching Robert Lansing SMITH from the Albany area. The only references I have are (1) a family listing by an unknown source, and (2) a book with family commentary, with no sources given. According to the list, Robert was born abt 1841; his father's name, I think, was Cornell (according to the book). The 1880 Census for R.L. SMITH (he was known by that name) seems to support the info, giving his age in 1880 as 40. We know his wife's name to be Sarah Elizabeth JARY (whose lineage we have been able to follow; the census incorrectly listed her as "S.A." - sigh, so much for accurate references!); his 2 daughters, also initialed in the Census are consistent with our listing.
A complication to our research came from a handwritten note by a descendant of R.L SMITH, who was researching the family for her church. Her note gave the name "VON VOLKENBURG" with no connective remark to the name "Cornell" but written alongside the name. I have been trying to find info on VON (VAN) VOLKENBURG (VALKENBURG) but have turned up nothing to link our SMITH. I recently replied to a posting regarding the VV name, but there was no connection in this corner. By an unfortunate coincidence, the VAN VALKENBURG (.org) website is under reconstruction and I am unable to get anything from that.
The VV family and the VAN DEUSEN family seem to have some connections; the VAN DEUSEN family and the LANSING family seem to have some connections, so I'm hoping, by some long-shot, that there may be some connection to the LANSING of R.L.'s family.
Have I confused anyone yet?
