Debra;
Is it true that Delilah's mother, Polly (Webb) died in Decatur Co.?I have that in my records, but I don't believe I have an actual date.
The family lived for a short while in Greene Co., Indiana, before moving to Decatur Co.One of Jacob and Polly's son's, Archibald, was my dad's great-grandfather. He lived to be past 90 years old, and we have a post-card he sent to my grandfather's mother (his daughter Margaret Fields) before he died. He was not well, and was wanting them to visit him before long. It was post-marked as DRESDEN, IN., in 1882.They all lived in the Greene / Martin Co., Indiana area at that time.His handwriting and spelling was very articulate, making me believe that his family probably had fairly good access to schools while they were growing up, which at first was in Virginia.
The schools were just getting started in Southern Indiana in the mid-1800's, and much reading and writing was done by individual teachers going to households where the adults wished to become literate.
My dad had heard that Archibald Lanter was one of the individuals who helped out in that way, but I cannot prove that.
