Hi Marlene, WOW!!! That was an old query that you responded to.
I have never heard of children taken over their step father’s surname.I looked up the possibility at PRDH (University of Montreal) and for sure there were no Daneau dit LaPlante before 1799.The law then was that when you got married you had to use your birth father’s surname in the marriage contracts. If there were some, they came after 1799.You should have every line proven from church records at a genealogy center not from internet resources.
You said (and it is confusing to me):
“I actually descend from the Daneau line but my Gr. Grandfather was Pierre (Peter) LaPlante (born 1853).”
If your Great Grandfather descends from the LaPlante line so do you.So if you descend from the Daneau line, is that on your maternal side.
If your grandfather was Pierre LaPlante, he could come from any one of the pioneers that with a different surname with LaPlante as a dit name. There were many of them.“Dit” names were given for many reasons, but not because your mother remarried. Many of them did remarry because they could not survive alone in those days.LaPlante was one of the most common aka names because it was quite often assigned as a military name to identify what company an individual came from.
On the other hand if your Pierre LaPlante is a descendant of Joseph LaPlante born about 1728 in France married to Marie-Louise Cottret-dit-Descoudrays, then he has no dit name.Joseph is my 5th Great Grandfather, was born in France and came to Canada in the mid 1700s, that was late considering that most of the pioneers arrived between 1635 and 1675.I seldom trust information that I find on the internet. You say that Joseph LaPlante was one of three men to come from France to settle in Canada.I am not sure what that is all about.Thousands came before him.
I will e-mail you direct later (perhaps tomorrow) with other information.Janet
