Thanks for your response, Georgia.
There are enough common parts between your chart and my source (History of Lee County, Georgia, pp 417-422, published 1983 by the Lee County Historical Society) that your James Laramore and Anna Couvin (Covin) and mine are almost certainly the same individuals.Your chart provides welcome additional information on "the French connection".
I recently visited Abbeyville, SC and found only an 1820 census record of James Laramore in the Abbeyville County Library.(I was in Abbeyville primarily to search for records of another branch of my family and ran short of time.)I did notice that the family name "Covin" appeared in several indexes that I saw in the library and the courthouse.
I plan to search LDS Family History Center files, visit the Georgia and South Carolina Archives as well as making at least one more visit to Abbeyville. Its a very pleasant town with many historical points of interest.
Almost all of the old land records in Abbeyville District were destroyed by fire. There are two old Platt books for land "...south of the Saluda River..." in the early 1800's.I was preoccupied by platts I found for the other branch of my family and did not find any platts for theLaramore family.I'll look again for Laramore platts on the next visit.
I didn't search for Laramore or Couvin wills in Abbeyville, as my prior information said that both James and Anna had come to Abbeyville from France, moved to Lee County, Georgia before the 1850 census and died there.I wasn't aware that James had a possible ancestor (John) in Abbeyville.
You may already know this but I have also learned that Abbeyville was named by a French Huguenot, Dr. John de la Howe, for his home town in France.I learned in Abbeyville that there was a French settlement at Bordeaux in the Lower Long Canes area of the old Abbeville District.Bordeaux is now in McCormick County, which has since been formed from part of the old Abbeyville District.Bordeaux still appears on maps of the area, though it seems to be a very small place.I may look there for old cemeteries.
I'll post more if I find it.
