Apparently you haven't yet seen the year of immigration on a census. When you say he came in the "early 1900s", is 1909 a year which sounds right?

I do see this man on the Emibas CD, made from registrations in the Swedish parish to go to a foreign country. It is about 75% complete, but it is much less complete after the mid-1890s. This man has the right birthdate and name, however.

I suppose Oalf is a typo for Olof. What is the source for Olof Johansson's name? I understand that your relatives provided that name but what is their source?

I am trying to find the birth record for your Karl Albert on the date you provided but the records are a mess. The priest must have carried around bits of paper with the information and entered them out of order. I'm looking through September now and I still see births in January and a few later months.

I found it. This comes from one of the sites with scans of the original handwritten parish records.

Karl Albert was born 15 April and baptised 17 April 1885 in Grangärde parish, Kopparberg county, Dalarna province. (Records were kept in the parish.)

His father was Johannes Larsson and his wife. The wife was not named. (Usually they were.) This name fits your information about changing his name from Johansson to Larsson. His patronymic last name as an adult would have been Johansson (son of Johan/Johannes) and he changed to his father's patronymic last name of Larsson (son of Lars), probably for the reasons listed in the name article I linked for you. I can't read the location within the parish where the parents lived, but perhaps someone on the Sweden forum can. Type Sweden into the "Jump to Forum" space at the top right of the page.

I don't know where your family got the "Olof Johansson" last name.

1890 Swedish Census CD:

The residence of Björneberg within the parish is the same residence found on the Emibas CD when Karl Albert Johansson emigrated.

I think I've found your Carl Albert but since you probably are going to worry since your family says the father's name was "Oalf Johanson", check the Swenson Center as I suggested earlier. That is a wonderful archive and perhaps you will find the information you need there.

I checked the 1890 Swedish Census CD for a father named Olof Johansson and a child named Albert born 1885. The only hit had a child named Olof Albert, so I think your family story is not true. If there was a Karl Albert born to an Olof Johansson, then they left Sweden before the end of 1890.

I suppose Carl Albert was a naturalized citizen, and if he arrived at the time this one did, you can be sure that the records were from a federal court. Those records will be VERY detailed, telling full birthdate and birth place, port and date of leaving Sweden, port and date and ship name for arriving in the U.S. and information on his wife and children if he had them during the naturalization process.

I think you need the NARA in Chicago for a naturalization in Marquette, Michigan.

But if not, look at this list of NARA facilities.

What kind of occupation did Carl Albert have?

Judy
