George Lash was born on December 14, 1843 in Ohio and died May 25, 1915 in Broken Bow, Nebraska. George Lash was born to german immigrants when there were only 27 states in the Union and William Harrison was President. He spoke only german until school age. George Lash worked splitting rails in the Maine woods. Later he learned his carpenter trade while building railroad bridges. He met Isaac Gear Wright and his family when the railroad reached Nebraska. He prospected for gold in the Dakotas, but had better luck carpentering. He built Chief Red Cloud's first frame house. He returned to Nebraska to marry Maria Evaline Wright, taking her to San Francisco, then to Hillsboro Oregon, until 1884, then returned to Nebraska. They lived in a sod house, but later he built many of the frame houses in his community. He built the Baptist Church in 1907. In 1899 they built their frame house. In 1906 he retired almost completely from carpentering and lived on the farm--he was then 63 years old. He never owned an auto, although many of his neighbors did.
