Elbridge Conkling Lashbrook b.1861 in NY

Has anyone researched the Joseph & Angeline(Warner) Lashbrook lineage from Gouvener, St. Lawrence Co., NY? In particular, my great grandfather, Elbridge C.?
He shows up on the 1870 US Census at age 9. But he's listed in the "relationship to head of household" column as "nephew". When he was 17 y/o he walked, as family history says, to Northern Iowa, in particular, the Kossuth Co. area. While there, the census picks him up living with the Warner family. Census again lists him as a nephew, Related to Angeline? He began working in Warner's blacksmith shop and married Bertha Stephenson. They had six children. My grandmother was one of those 6. Questions: Has anyone figured out who Elbridge's biological parent are? Why did he live from a toddler's age with Joseph & Angeline?
