1992 Letter from Leona LaTourette

This link will take you to a transcription of a letter my grandmother Leona LaTourette wrote in December 1992.

www.latourette.blogspot.com

The letter is somewhat anecdotal, and contains references to Jean and Marie being married in France and describes the conditions under which they left. It gives a lot of information about my great grandfather Laforde LaTourette and my grandfather Elston Gustav LaTourette, which may be of limited interest, but there is a lot of tangential information that others may find useful.

It is – if nothing else – a good read.

I have read in previous posts by Carol Peterson and John E. LaTourette a discussion about whether Jean and Marie were married in France or not. This letter uses almost the exact phrase “took the family bible and jewels”. This is interesting since Ms. Peterson is an extremely distant cousin, and yet the story has flowed down multiple branches of the family.

Our family records show Jean and Marie getting married in New York “Not long after their arrival” on July 16, 1693 and daughter Mary (Marie) being baptized on Dec 6, 1693 – (not 1694 as written by John E. LaTourette). Obviously one of us has our dates wrong, and it very well could be me. I should have some material in my possession in June that will confirm or dispute the 1693 baptism date. But if the 1693 date is true, then Jean and Marie would have been expecting Mary (Marie) when they were got married in New York and it would add a little support the anecdote that they were already married in France.

Ultimately – we will probably never be able to prove the French marriage. The records were destroyed after the Edict of Fontainebleau (10-22-1685) revoked the Edict of Nantes (1598) and the Edict of Nimes (1629), and ordered the all R.P.R. (Huguenots – Protestants) temples to be “demolished without delay”.

While I believe it is plausible that John and Marie were already married, I respect the opinions of those who do not believe it.
