A third-generation Oregonian, John’s grandfather, Lyman D.C. LaTourette, was born 23 May 1825 in Lodi New York and settled on a land grant in Oregon City Oregon where he married Lucy Jane Gray in 1851. John’s grandfather, Charles David LaTourette (m. Sedonia Bird Shaw) and Charles’ brother, Dewitt Clinton LaTourette, co-founded the Bank of Oregon City. The homes of both gentlemen are on the historic register. John was an avid outdoorsman. Whether salmon fishing on the Oregon Coast, clam digging at Gearhart, duck hunting at Mouse Lake Farms on Sauvie Island, golfing or tending to his garden, John was happiest enjoying natures bounty. The consummate host with a great sense of humor, John was always ready to throw another party for family and friends. He earned the nickname “Farmer John” from the many friends who were recipients of the vegetable he grew. He was a member of the Valley Club of Montecito and the Coral Casino and Cabana Club, where in addition to golf and tennis, he was known as a fierce contender in bridge, Pitch and dominoes. His Oregon affiliations included Waverly Country Club, The Arlington Club, and the Astoria Country Club. After traveling the World and enjoying retirement, John and Murielle returned to their beloved Gearhart (Oregon) in 2002, when John found great joy in again tending his vegetable and flower gardens.
