John: This is what I have; Jean Mercereau b abt 1638 Meschers, Saintonge Provence, Fr ( now Poiou-Charentes) d before 4/29/1681. Occupation: Military Officer...Captain at the Soubise Military Base, then made Commandant at the new Rochefort Arsenal. You may visit the base by using Google France>search for travel> Rochefort. It takes you on a tour of the city, and the Arsenal is a part. This included a naval base as protection against treats from the Atlantic. It is believed Jean assisted in the building of the arsenal. Jean m Elizabeth du Bois b abt 1642 Moeze, Charente Maritime Fr d Staten Island, buried The French Church, Westfield, S.I. Cemetery no longer exists.
Jean and Elizabeth second child, first daughter, was Elizabeth b abt 1660 Moeze Fr d S.I. m 4/29/1681 in La Rochelle Fr. Pierre Masse b abt 1656 moeze Fr d abt 1696, son of Daniel Masse b 1616 of Moeze, Charent Maritime, Fr and wife b abt 1620. Daniel b 1616 Moeze Fr was the son of Andre Lamoreaux a native of Meschers in Saintonge Provence Fr and mother Suzanne LaTour....... Elizabeth's mother and Pierre's sister Madeleine stood up for them, at their wedding, but not Jean, the father. Thus we assume Jean died before their Marriage in 1681.
Elizabeth and Pierre had 4M 3F who were:
Elie b before 1/25/1682, d 2/8/1690 Schenectady Massacre, NY age 18.
Marie/Madeline b before 3/1684.
Pierre b 1684 Moeze Fr d 1684 Moeze.
Daniel b 4/29/1689 NYC bapt 5/6/1689 New York French Church..witnesses Daniel Mercereau and Marie Parre wife of Ezechiel Grazzilly. Daniel m Ester Fourret.
Ester b abt 6/26/1690
Pierre b 5/17/1693 bapt 7/2/1693 New York French Church, witnesses Jean Latourette, Marie Susanne Doucinet.
Jeanne Margarite b 5/22/1696 d 8/1739 m Daniel Lamoureaux.

Pierre Masse and his family were living in Schenectady New York the night of the Schenectady Massacre 2/8/1690. Elizabeth was skelped and left for dead. She recovered, gave birth to more children and lived with her brother Joshua b 1658 in Port Richmond, sometime after 1696. It is presumed Pierre died shortly after Jeanne's birth in 1696.

Jean Latourette b abt 1651 was a carpenter when he arrived in New York.New York City Council issued a warrant for 50 shillins to Jean as payment for his services as a carpenter. Both he and wife Marie b 11/6/1670 bapt 11/9/1670 Moeze, were Huguenots. But they lived some distance appart. How did they meet?? They were m 1684 before the rescending of the Edict of Nantes. My theory would be that Pierre served his apprentice as a carpenter at the Rochefort Arsenal, when it was being built. The town of Rochefort on the Charente River, just north of Soubise, was chossen by French Minister Colbert, as an ideal place to defend france from Atlantic attack. built between 1666 and 1688 it was a shipyard and arsenal.Pierre could get there by boat through Biarritz and he was at the ideal age of 15-17.
Sadly after the Rescending of the Edict of Nantes Rochefort became a labour camp for Huguenots that refused to be baptised in the favoured church. They were assigned there for 100 years.
