Dear Cousin John: Thank you for the note about the correct location of Osse. It is unfortunate that sloppy research (not checking original sources) and the doctoring of information (practically genealogical fraud) allowed so many false fables and tales to be built up over the past 160 plus years about our ancestor from Osse, Bearn (Osse-en-Aspe). It will likely take years to eradicate all the misinformation that has been written about Jean and his heritage. However, the true story is more interesting than the fables.

Relative to David’s ancestry, there is some privileged information in three extensive genealogies developed by cousins in France, which represent many years of painstaking research. However, I think I am in bounds to say that it is very likely that David is the great-grandson of Gassiot. That is, there appears to be two intervening generations.

I will share this response by separate e-mail with the genealogist, whose work is the most extensive on the Latourrettes of Osse and the Aspe valley and who will eventually put this all in perspective. He is aware of this forum, but it would be up to his discretion to comment on your question.

Best wishes, John
