Dear James Murphy,

I have seen this Maud Latourette married to a Benjamin Britton before but I have never come across any proof that a Maud Latourette ever existed during this time period. Maud/Maude is not a family name during this time. I have a great aunt Maud Latourette, but “Maude Latourette” is a rare occurrence in my research and have only found a few in the thousands of Latourette’s I have located over the years. I am not sure where this Maude Latourette originates from or if anyone ever located a primary source for any vitals (or contemporary reference) for her. If someone has, I would love to see it.

I suspect that there may have indeed been a Maud, but that her name was not Latourette. The confusion may have originated in the fact that a Benjamin Britton (supposed son of Ben. Britton and Maud Latourette) married a woman by the name of Hannah Lewis. Hannah Lewis was the daughter of Jonathan Lewis (who was born on Long Island and came to Staten Island where he left a will) and Abigail Scudder. Jonathan and Abigail had a rather large family and three of them married people associated with my Latourette and Mercereau family:

1. Jonathan Lewis married Elizabeth Mary Latourette, daughter of David Latourette and Catherine Pollion. David was the son of the immigrants Jean Latourette and Marie Mercereau.

2. Bathsheba Lewis married David Mercereau, the son of Joshua Mercereau and Marie Chadeayne. David was the brother of Marie who married Jean Latourette II and their father Joshua is the brother of Marie, the wife of Jean Latourette I.

3. Elizabeth Lewis married Jacques Latourette, daughter of David Latourette and Catherine Pollion. (Jacques and Elizabeth Mary were siblings as you see).

I suspect that someone may have assigned a Maud (if there ever was a Maud) the last name of Latourette due to all the intermarriage, and the rather tangled family tree we have at this time. It could have been one simple error in someone’s research that has been passed down time and time again and has now become a fact. The only other possibility is that Maude is a relative of my Jean Latourette I (but not his child) but I highly doubt this. If you do have any primary source for this Maude Latourette please pass it on I would love to see it.

Hope this helps.

Robert Hoadley
