Short History of Osse Protestantism/The Latourrette Heritage

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the reconstruction of Temple Bethel, Madame Gilberte Gaubil wrote a short history of Protestantism in Osse, Bearn (Osse-en-Aspe, France). Madame Gaubil is the President of the Presbytery of the Reformed Parish of Osse-en-Aspe and a member of the Administrative Council of the Center for the Study of Bearnais Protestantism, Pau, France.

Since so little is known by the descendants of Jean Latourrette and Marie Mercereau, married at L’Eglise francaise du St. Esprit in New York on July 16, 1693, about their heritage from Osse, Bearn and the founding Protestant minister of Osse, Gassiot Latourrette, I commissioned a translation of Madame Gaubil’s French text into English.

With Madame Gaubil’s permission, I am posting the English version of the history on my web site

www.latourrette.net

On the main page of the web site, a click on the Huguenot Cross will take you to the history.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: This is to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. Frederic Pauzat of Paris and Osse-en-Aspe, France, in preparing this translation and in presenting the author’s paper “Jean Latourrette Leaving Osse, Bearn (The story of Jean leaving in 1685)” at the 200th anniversary in Osse. This paper is also found on the web site. Appreciation also goes to my son, Marc La Tourette, who read the paper at the anniversary celebration in Osse in French, August 7, 2005, with Mr. Pauzat’s assistance, and developed this web site.

Madame Gaubil has provided the author with many valuable insights into the history of Osse and the history of Protestantism at Osse. Her assistance in my attempt to bring the true story of the heritage of the Latourrette family to America is greatly appreciated.

Finally to my translator, Frederique Marsault Ledbetter, originally from Paris, France, and now of Prescott, AZ, I give thanks for her skills and diligence in selecting the words and passages to capture the correct meanings as she goes back and forth between the two languages.
