I'm trying to solve a mystery, so at this point I'm perhaps grasping at straws. Here's my story.
In my deceased father's effects I found an old leather-bound photo album of Civil War era people I'm trying to identify. It stands to reason they were my ancestors, but of course nobody wrote names on the photos, so I haven't a clue!Well, maybe a wee one.On only one photo, of two young boys, was written "Edgar 11 years and William 8 years."No surname, but something rang a bell.On the 1850 census from Rose Twp., Carroll Co., OH, the next door neighbor of my G-g-uncle Jacob SWANEY, Jr. was a woman named Rebecca DEARDOFF and her children, among whom were Edgar 5, and William H. 8, just the reverse age range of those in the photo. It could be that whoever wrote the names got the two boys mixed up.Anyhow, does anyone know of a William or Edgar DEARDOFF?
The whole family is listed as having been born in OH, but Jacob SWANEY, Sr.'s wife Elizabeth was born in PA in 1790.
There is no adult male listed with Rebecca and the 5 children, but we can assume that he was a DEARDOFF.The other children are Catharine 9, Marion 6, and Isaac 3.
So, it's my theory that Rebecca is the daughter of Jacob SWANEY, Sr. and a younger generation Elizabeth DEARDOFF and that there is a connection because of the recurrence of given names such as Isaac and Elizabeth.
All help appreciated.
