Yesterday, after 20 to 30 years, I went over old Federal census records of the Town of Hope, Hamilton, County, N.Y. Squire Lawton (Laughton), my great great great grandfather, gives in the 1850 and 1870 census his place of birth as Vt. But in the l860 census he gives place of birth as NY. Zeruiah, my great great great grandmother, in the 1850, 1870 and 1880 census gives her name as Zeruiah. But in the l860 census gives her name as Isabella (in other records I have only seen it as Zeruiah, Seruiah and Sara). The census taker for Hope, 1860 census, wrote in a fine and excellent script. And in the block for sex of the person he without deviation entered in script in the center of the block an M or F. For the family of Leonard Lawton, Hope, son of Squire Lawton, in l860, for Francis he entered in the center of the block in script an F. Then - at some time in the census taking process - he entered in a lower open s
