Regarding Mina Osterhouts posting to the mormon web, as pertains to the posting I made a few minutes ago to this on Laughton Family Forum, there is a Civil Rights Act now. Those were different days. The mill, tannery and farm of Squire Laughton was a resting place and place of lodging for blacks coming up from the south, which has led to much speculation that Zeruiah, wife of Squire was a part black woman. Which is possibly true. It has also led to rumor that my great grandfather, John S. Lawton, grandson of Squire, was in the Civil War and brought a black woman home from it. He was John Squire Lawton and changed the name in later years to John Sidney Lawton. He was frequently called Squire. I have never found a record of his being in the Civil War.
