A "vergne" in south of France is a wood of alders.
The origin of the name is in south west of France. There are a lot of places and villages named Vergne or Lavergne and a province "Auvergne".
A lot of different families are named Vergne and Lavergne. Try http://www.geneanet.orghttp://www.geneanet.org
There is not coat of arms of every Lavergne. Most of Lavergne are not nobles or notorious and they were have not having one.
But it is always possible to draw an alder on a shield...
If the shield is white, the trunc with roots black, the leaves green, that gives in French heraldic langage :
"D'argent, un aulne arraché et au tronc de sable, ombragé de sinople"
