The old Lawing Mill in Union Mills was originally owned by the Gilkey Family. William Daniel "Wid" Lawing aquired the mill about 1900.Wid was a son of Daniel Lawing and a grandson of Sterling Lawing. In the 1920's the mill went to his son Carl Lawing and remained in the family until Carl's death about 1975.My g-grandfather was John Baity Lawing, an older brother of James Jasper Lawing. My Father and some of his brothers remember visiting their great uncle Jasper Lawing in Spindale. Several of Jasper's children visited with my grandfather in the Harmony Grove -Nebo community. In 1929 my great uncle Ennis Lawing supported the union during a strike in Marion. After the strike was setteled, he stayed with "Uncle Jasper" until things cooled down for awhile.I still have one great aunt, Sue Lawing Fender, born in 1902, who can recall aunt Jane and uncle Jasper and what a good cook Aunt Jane was. Jasper Lawing was named for his uncle, James Jasper Davis, who left home as a young boy(16), went to Petersburg in 1864 and enlisted with the 22nd Reg. N.C. Troops. J.J. Davis was captured April 2,1865 and was paroled the following June.
Some other notes. Sterling Lawing was in the War of 1812. Jasper and John had a brother named Willliam "Babe" Lawing who was shot by a policeman or a deputy somewhere in South Carolina during the 1890's. No one ever mentioned or discussed this and the details are fuzzy. I have also heard they had another brother named Rucker Lawing but I cannot verify that information. William Horace Lawing and Daniel Lawing had a sister named Elizabeth who had a child named Mary out of wedlock during the 1850,s. Mary also had a child out of wedlock in 1879 and was excluded from Bethel Baptist Church for fornication.
