Leatherwoods -- Stilwell, Adair County, OK & Tulsa
I am looking for information on the Leatherwood branch in both Stilwell and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Here is what I know:
My Paternal Great-Grandmother's name was Ethel -- b. (?), d. 1967 or 1968; lived/died in Tulsa.
Ethel had 3 children:
1. Cephus Leatherwood (may be spelled incorrectly) -- b. (?), d. 1948 (approx.); born in Stilwell, Ok./lived in Texas.
2. Vernon Leatherwood -- b. (?), d. 1963; born in Stilwell, Ok./lived in Kansas City, Ks.
3. Raymond Leatherwood -- b. 1909, d. 1994; born in Stilwell, Ok./lived in Kansas City, Mo.
My Grandfather, Raymond Leatherwood, married Vesta Tidwell (1909-2002) in Stilwell, Ok. in 1927.She, too, was born in Stilwell, Ok.; lived in Kansas City, Mo.
Raymond and Vesta Leatherwood had one child, Gary R. Leatherwood -- b. 1941 -- my father.
My Maternal Great-Grandmother's name was Amanda Leatherwood -- her second marriage was to a Leatherwood whose name I do not know.Amanda Leatherwood -- b. 1891 (approx.), d. 1982; lived/died in Stilwell, Ok.
I also know my Grandfather had several uncles, one of whom he referred to as "Uncle Quill."The cemetary in Stilwell, Ok. is on land which used to be a part of Uncle Quill's farm.
I also know my Grandmother is on the Roll -- her biological father, Lee Tidwell, was Cherokee. In addition, I have been told that the family originally came from Georgia and Tennessee.
A post on this forum, dated June 23, 2000, by Blair Leatherwood, identified a Martha Tucker Leatherwood, wife of Marcus Llewellyn Leatherwood, who was born on Oct. 31, 1850 (Gilmer Co., GA) and died on Sept. 13, 1928 (Stilwell, Adair Co., OK).Martha Tucker Leatherwood must be a part of the puzzle, I just don't know how to fit her in.
Any thoughts anyone might have would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
D. Adam Leatherwood
