Leatherwood Family Secret...
Zachariah and wife, Nancy {Allen} Leatherwood migrated to Alabama abt 1837, from SC.They had 9 children, some born in SC, and some in Alabama. They can be traced in the north western part of Ala, and the north eastern corner of Mississippi.Their youngest child, a duaghter named Susan Ellen {or Susannah}, was born between 1840 & 1843.Her life is a complete mystery, except for the birth of her two sons. Her first son, Issac Ulysses, was born Dec 25, 1859.She is said to have been living in Hardin County Tennessee during the time of the Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War.She gave birth to her 2nd son, Josephus C., Feb 10, 1863, which would have also been during the Civil War conflict.Susan vanishes from family records, and her sons, Issac & Josephus, are raised by their grandparents, Zachariah & Nancy.Their surnames are also changed to "Leatherwood", their mother's maiden name.
Issac married Mary L. Terry and had 6 children in north Alabama.Josephus married 1st wife, Mary d.1901, and 2nd wife, Ida Oliver in Texas.
With Susan's mysterious disappearance, and her boys' last name being changed to Leatherwood, it would appear that there is a "skeleton in the closet".Someone, somewhere, in the family holds the key to unlock the secret of WHO is the father of Issac U. & Josephus C. Leatherwood, & what happened to their mother, Susan? Why did Zachariah go to such lengths to conceal this information?
Issac is my gr-gr-grandpa.Maybe one of my Texas kin, descendents of Josephus, or even siblings of Susan, has information to help us find out who we are???
