My father's family originally had the name LeBuffe when they came over to Canada from France in the early 1800's. There may be a link between LeBuff and LeBuffe. In our case it appears that the mispelling was the result of an illiterate ancestor.
It may be that your grandfather anglicized the name by dropping the 'e' or it may have been another case of misspelling upon arrival.
