Occupation: Butcher at Mambach

An "Alvis" (?=Alois) Lederer, 38 yo male laborer, from Germany to New York, travelling alone, arrived on 8 August 1891 on the Dania, bound from Hamburg and Le Harve to New York (Germans to America, vol. 61, p. 163). Alois would have been 38 yo on 8 August 1891. {The Dania was built by A/G Vulcan Shipyard, Stettin, Germany,1889. 4,076 gross tons; 370 (bp) feet long; 44 feet wide. Steam triple expansion engine, single screw. Service speed 14 knots. Approximately 1100 passengers. Built for Hamburg-American Line, German flag, in 1889 and named Dania. Hamburg-New York service. Sold to Compania Transatlantica Line, Spanish flag, in 1895 and renamed Monserrat. Reverted to Hamburg-American Line in 1896 and renamed DANIA. Returned to Hamburg-American Line, German flag, in 1897 and reverted to Monserrat. Barcelona-New York-Caribbean service. Sold 1926. Scrapped in 1927.} "Alvis" is an extraordinarily uncommon name, and an unclosed O was likely misread as a V. The only other Alois Lederer listed in the Germans to America series between 1886 (Leo's birth) and 1891 (Ellis Island records begin 1892 and he is not listed in those records) was in 1888 at 22 yrs (too young to have sired Elizabeth in 1879) (vol. 56, p. 414). All Lederer listings in Germans to America 1886 to 1891 are recorded in the Lederer genealogy file. Further support for this being the date of immigration is provided by Albert Lederer's school report cards: Alois Lederer signed these on Oct. 1889, Apr. 1890, Oct. 1890, and Apr. 1891, but another person signed on 18 October 1891.

Notes for EDWINA (EDEWINE) BERGER:
Arrived at Ellis Island NY on 16 May 1892 with her 6 children on the ship La Gascogne departing from Le Harve, France. Travelled in First Class forward family cabin. At Ellis Island, first and second class passengers were processed on board ship, but third or steerage class were ferried to Ellis Island when they underwent medical and legal examinations in the Main Building. (La Gascogne was built by Forges et Chantiers de la Mediterranee, La Seyne, France, 1887. 7,090 gross tons; 507(bp) feet long; 51 feet wide. Compound engine, single screw. Service speed 17 knots. 1,055 passengers (390 first class, 65 second class, 600 third class). Built for French Line, French flag, in 1887 and named La Gascogne. Le Havre-New York service. Scrapped in 1920.} Have copy of ship's manifest from ellisisland.org. In addition, information is listed in Germans to America, vol. 62, p. 329. Alois, her husband, did not travel with them and probably came to America the year before. He died in 1895.

In 1900 Census (Roll 145 Book 2, Page 72), listed as Minnie? Winnie? (handwriting difficult), living at 1 Lyon Place, 7th Ward, New Haven CT, along with 5 children (Otto is not listed). Birth and marriage information is taken from this census; none of them were naturalized citizens as of this census. No occupation listed. Reads, writes, and speaks English. House is rented.

The only other Lederer's in CT in 1900 were the family of Julius Lederer, who lived in New Haven at 135 Dwight, only 1.5 miles from this family. Julius was born in New York in 1859, but both his parents were born in Germany, as were those of his New York born wife Martha (moved to Connecticut between 1886 and 1890, 4 sons). Was this the son of an earlier immigrant relative who settled in New Haven, and is that why this family came to live in New Haven? Edna says she recognizes the name and thought he was related.

1910 Census (Connecticut, NEW HAVEN, Roll 138 Book 3, Page 104a) Ward 2. 241 Davenport St. Edwina Lederer, Head. 60 yo, widow, 6 children born, 6 living. 1892 entry to US, no entry in naturalization column. No occupation. Owns mortgaged house. Also listed at that address are two daughters, Eloise and Elizabeth, and a son, Leo. Eloise and Elizabeth are the same person, although their ages are listed as 26 and 29, respectively. Eloise is a lithographer working in a box factory, who was unemployed for 8 months of the year. Leo is a plumber.

1920 Census (Reel 190, E.D. 414, Sheet 6, Line 10): 57(?) Fourth Avenue, West Haven, with Leo and another family (Thomas, Mary and Veronica Onrill, who rented). Edwina owned the house, mortgaged. 69 yo. Widowed. Immigrated 1892, Naturalization papers applied for 1919. Not employed.

Albert usually spoke German with her. Lived with Albert and Mary when she became ill and then died. Before that lived with Leo.

Information from grave marker lists Feb. 28 as date of death, not Feb. 26.
