Is there anyone who has worked extensively on the two families of Solomon Leeman who lived in Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, Canada?
From what I can see online Solomon was born 1797 in Ulster County, New York; first wife Amanda or Melinda nee Darling, second wife Lucinda Babcock.
I am interested in verifying the names of his children from his first wife. I have a list of nine possible children.
There is a Mandy Leeman perhaps Amanda? or Malinda? who was married to Nelson TRYON and lived at Portland, Ontario, see 1851 census. They had 2 children John and Juliann or Zelah Ann- something must have happened to Mandy, as Nelson re-married to Mary Ann Vanwinkle about 1855. See 1861 census (Kennebec?)- John and Zelah Ann are with Nelson and Mary Ann plus the 2 younger children of Nelson and Mary Ann.
In searching to see who the parents could be for Mandy nee Leeman Tryon, I find Solomon and speculate that he was her father. Mandy was born abt. 1828.
Could she be the twin to Ira who is mentioned in some posted messages?
There is more...
In working on my TRYON file (go to Tryon family at Genforum and see three recently posted messages), I have also been sitting and staring at family of Nelson Tryon's eldest brother- John Tryon who was born about 1816-1817, was married to a woman named Catherine who was born at Ernestown. John was accused of the murder of Francis Fisher in 1873 and hung that same year Dec. 1873 in Barrie, Simcoe County for same murder. I have no idea what happened to his wife Catherine, and it is possible that she died prior to John's death.
I find three children for John and Catherine, and not sure if there were others born up to 1873 as I cannot find this family on the 1871 census. It does not appear from the 1861 census that any children were born after 1845/1846.
Here is the 1851 and 1861 census info for them:
1851 Camden East in L & A County:
John Trion age 37 birthday in November born at Ernestown
Katherine age 28 birthday in February born at Ernestown
Margaret age 13 birthday in June born at Camden
Solomon age 10 birthday in December born at Camden
George age 7 birthday in November born at Camden
1861 census at Normandy, Grey County, Ont.:
John Tryon Tavern Keeper age 46 married in 1831 (must be 1837, not 1831)
Catherine age 43
Margaret Babcock married in 1858 age 22
Johia Hoyle Babcock age 23 (husband of Margaret nee Tryon)
Sidney Tryon age 15 (George Sidney Tryon)
Margaret TRYON daughter of John and Catherine married Jehiel BABCOCK apparently in 1858, as was written on that 1861 census. I don't know whose son Jehiel was- was he son of Peter Babcock and Rachel Althouse of Camden East? I don't know what hap. to him. I have later info for Margaret who re-married to ELI CRITTENDEN on Jan. 3, 1877 in Bruce County, Ont. and moved to Niagara County, New York. She appears to have had 2 Babcock sons Isaac and John born 1871 and 1874 in Ontario and one Crittenden daughter, Maggie born abt 1877 in Ontario.
In the 1861 census above, Sidney Tryon age 15 is George Sidney Tryon and I have additional info on him. One other given name for him from posted info online is LEEMAN.
I have no idea what hap. to John and Catherine's son Solomon Tryon born about 1841 at Camden East. Anyone?
Anyway I am sitting here poring over this family and looking at the names, always wondering what John Tryon's wife Catherine's maiden name could be and it hit me- I am willing to bet she was Catherine LEEMAN and a daughter of Solomon Leeman of Camden East. That would explain why she named one son Solomon and gave the middle name Leeman to another.
I wish I could find the death records for George Tryon and for Margaret Crittenden the daughter; my hope would be that one of those records would give Catherine's maiden name.
George Tryon was alive in 1911 for the census, but died before his second wife Margaret did in October 1932. Does anyone have his date of death or death record info?
I found Margaret (Tryon) Crittenden up to 1900 census at Tonawanda, Niagara, New York- does anyone have further info on her?
As I create this lengthy TRYON file, anyone is welcome to have it. I can send via email as a word document or as a Gedcom.
Thanks from Nora
