Elizabeth, saw your posting on the Legare family forum. Hope I can be some help. The Legares descended from the original Solomon did indeed own a plantation on John's Is. Still do as a matter of fact. I grew up in the house that was built to replace the one burnt in the war[DAMN YANKEES]. What actually happened to the house on our place{Hanscombe Point} has been a major discussion in our family for the last 100 years. My grandfather said the house was shelled by an Union gunboat, The Isaac Smith, which was later captured by Confederate forces right in front of our place. His sister, my great-aunt says the house was burned by loyal slaves to keep the yankees from using it. Our family(yours & mine) also owned Legareville across the creek from Hanscombe Point. Some descendants (The Hays) still own and live there. Legareville was burned by the Confederate troops stationed there. I have more info on that if you or any one else seeing this would like it. The Union troops did loot some items out of Legareville. Thats how I came across this forum. While trying to find info on the boat the Maple Leaf, which was the ship used to transport the Union troops to Fla. I did a search for Solomon Legare. If anyone is interested in the Maple Leaf there is a web page for it at www.mapleleafshipwreck.com.But anyway I was truly amazed at the number of people related to and wanting info on the Legares. I was really surprised at you having heard the story of the house being burnt. Like I said the exact details we may never know but the house was destroyed. I don't know where you live, but this just goesto show the internet is making a small world even smaller. If I can be of any further help to you or anyone else needing info on our family please post me a message or e-mail me. I don't have as good records as some people but my sister does, so we may be able to help. And to all my Legare relatives out there, we need to have a family reunion!!!
