John Norwood was a planter and schoolmaster. He moved from Virginia to Bute County North Caolina. He had an academy in Franklin (then Bute) County North Carolina and educated many pupils who afterwards distinguished themselves in various walks of life. He owned a large plantation, well stocked, and had many slvaes. He was appointed lay reader by the Bishop of London, and officiated in three churches; was secretary to the first Diocesan Convention that met in North Caolins after the Revolutionary war; was an ardent patriot, and both he an dhis wife contibuted in every way to the support of the cause and the welfare of the soldiers; and he served in 1775 as a member of the Committeeof Safety from Halifax district.
