Hi Sylvia,
I have been keeping a bit of a one name study on the LITTLEY / LETLEY families in Devon and Kent and Middlesex.My LITTLEY ancestors come from Ottery St Mary in Devon but some migrated to London and are burried at Abney Park Cemetery in Hackney.
I believe that the John Henry LITLEY that you are looking for was christened at Aylesford, Kent on 15 October 1815 (referenceBritish Isles Vital Records Index from LDS).He was the son of Gideon Henry LETLEY and Mary.Gideon was the son of John LETLEY and Lucey DAVIS and christened at Rochester, Kent on 28 March 1787 (referenceBritish Isles Vital Records Index from LDS).Gideon died in Surrey in 1849 (FreeBDM).
I have found a John Henry LITLEY, wife Mary Ann (born 1819 Southwark) and children in the 1851 Census, residing at:10 Wellington Strret, Bethnal Green.His occupation is shown at Journeyman Butcher.The following children (all born Spitafields) were residing with the family:
Elizabeth - born 1839;
Frederick - born 1840;
Charlotte - born 1842;
Eliza - born 1845;
Amelia - born 1847;
John - born 1849 and
Caroline - born 1850.
Unfortunately, there is no mention of your Mary Ann Amelia and I cannot find her in the Census Return.In addition, I cannot find the family in the 1861 Census.
Gideon would appear to have moved his family to Surrey.There are two other LETLEYs who have the occupation of Butcher in the 1851 Census:Gideon (1817 to 1885) and Frederick (born 1821) and in the 1861 Census:William LITTLEY (born 1814 at Maidstone).
I hope the above is of some help to you.By the way, I couldn't find your GARFIELD family in the 1861 Census.If you provide some more information - I will check again.
Janice
