Alexander LEVY of Poland to New York and
Looking for information on Alexander H. LEVY who was born in Poland (but may have come to America via England)about 1868 - 1871. He married Flora Kanter. She was born 4 July 1868 in New York (New York City, I believe). Her parents were from London, England. They had two sons, Russell LEVY and Alvin LEVY, and one daughter, Ruth LEVY. On the 1920 Census for Hudson County, New Jersey the family was living at 146 Clinton Avenue, Jersey City, NJ. in 1918, they lived at 40 Gardner Avenue in Jersey City. ? Their son, Russel E. Levy was listed as being 23 on the 1920 Census, but he was born 22 Apr 1895 in Brooklyn and died 1 Feb 1959. Another son, Alvin E. or S. Levy, was 21 on the 1920 Census. He was born in the Borough of Brooklyn probably on 10 Sept 1898 or 16 Dec 1900. A sister, Ruth Levy was 14 on the 1920 census. She was born in New Jersey. Does anyone know how to request for a Birth Certificate? On ancestry.com, I found a Frederick Kantor living at 135 Ewen in 1889-1890 and an Alexander "Alex" Levy (occupation listed as books, agent and clothing)lving at 146 or 149 Court in 1888-1889 in Brooklyn. There is an Alexander Levy, butcher living at 1317 De Kalb Avenue in 1888-1889 and at 1303 Myrtle Ave in 1889-1890. Alexander H. Levy, salesman, was at 87 Myrtle Ave, too.Charles B. Kantor and William Kantor were living at 61 Oakland Park as well as an Alexander H. Levy, salesman, living at 181 Court and 40 East Main (one address may be work address)in Rochester according to the 1888-1890 New York Directory. There are also Cigar Mfrs, John and Alexander Levy in Elmira, New York at 106 Pennsylvania Avenue and 515 Spaulding from 1889 until 1893. I don't know enough about New York to know the relationship of Brooklyn to Elmira and Rochester. Any information on the KANTER family of London and/or New York and the LEVY family of Poland and/or New York and New Jersey would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! Fredreica
