I recently discovered that my G-G-Grandfather, Lewis M. Reese originally had the surname Levy. The last (and thus far, only) record I find with him as Lewis M. Levy is the 1850 New York City census. By 1860 he was using the surname "Reese." It is not known why he took on a different last name. He was born in Philadelphia abt. 1826, according to his death certificate. Recent DNA testing of a male descendant of Lewis' tells us that we descend from the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe, which fits well with Lewis using the surname "Levy" in 1850.
Any information on Lewis M. Levy, or related families in there German-Jewish communities of Philadelphia around the time he was born would be of great interest.
