I have a similar experience in which my two of my Levy relations changed their names to Morgan. The route taken was that 2 Levy brothers married 2 Morgan sisters and, according to family lore, they changed their names as a condition of the marriage to the family name of their brides. In reality I have found evidence that one of the brothers changed his name legally several years after his marriage in 1895 as the name change was only announced on the New York Stock Exchange in 1903.

Have you looked for any marriages into the Reese family to explain the name change? My Levy family claimed the marriage was into the Pierpont Morgan banking family - which is nonsense. The father of the brides was Asher R Morgan, a New York lawyer who did appear, from time to time, in the New York Times society pages and who was previously married to A Oakey Hall's sister. So perhaps a little social climbing involved?!?
